This course is designed to introduce novice paddlers to Stand Up Surfing moderate surf conditions (<1m). Course ratio will be kept to a maximum of 1:4 to ensure safety and increase personal instruction time. The course will include land-based and water-based teaching sessions as well as video analysis during the evening.
Participants of the course should have taken the Advanced Flatwater SUP Course or have equivalent skill. Participants who have not taken the Advanced Flatwater course should be comfortable paddling in wind and choppy conditions and be comfortable moving on their board from parallel to surf stance. Skill assessments can be arranged prior to the course at the instructor’s discretion.

Paddle Surf Instruction on British Columbia’s West Coast
Enjoy the magic of Tofino and the west coast on our fun and friendly paddle surf weekend. Our weekend is designed to introduce paddlers to the ocean environment with the goal of catching your first wave or improving on your existing surf skill set. Clients will take part in dry land and on water teaching sessions that focus on safety, etiquette, paddling technique, decision making, weather and catching your first ride or improving on your existing paddle surf skill set. Our surf instructors provide technical coaching that will steepen your learning curve and keep you safe in the ocean environment.
Day 1 : 1:00-5:00pm
Afternoon: Participants arrive and check into their accommodations.
Evening: Tofino Paddle Surf: Introductions, Course Objectives, Surf Safety, Evening Surf
Day 2 : 8:30-4:30pm
Morning: Surf Safety, Etiquette, Prone Surfing, Launching into waves
Afternoon: Catching Waves, Bracing
Evening: Video Analysis
Day 3: 8:30-4:30pm
Morning: Bottom turns, Angled take-off, final surf
Afternoon: Video Analysis, Departures
* All around surf board

* Wetsuit (4mm or 5mm hooded suit is recommended)

Mike Darbyshire: Mike is stoked on all disciplines of SUP and is a Paddle Canada Instructor Trainer in flatwater, surf, river and touring. His true love is surfing and enjoys sharing the stoke with clients. Mike run’s the SUP program at Deep Cove Kayak and is sponsored athlete and racer by Starboard, Kokatat and Werner Paddles.
Catherine is a life long Tofino local and one of Canada’s top surfers. As a Paddle Canada SUP Instructor she teaches paddleboarding full time through her business Tofino Paddle Surf. With her vast experience growing up on the ocean and surfing, Catherine brings a wealth of local knowledge, technical surf expertise and a warm Tofino ambassadorship to the course. Catherine is sponsored by Roxy, Level Six and Aftanas Surfboards.
Norm is a Paddle Canada Surf instructor trainer, a multi day expeditions leader and team rider for Sunova Surfboards. Norm is from Squamish, B.C. and spends a lot of time paddle surfing here in Tofino, B.C. Norm also runs unique multi day sup expeditions to the Great Bear Rainforest, Belize and remote corners of Vancouver Island and is always excited about sharing the water with passionate people.
