SUP Ocean Touring the Discovery Islands

Our SOAR Ocean Camp offers an immersive training week for those who want to become competent with their paddleboard in a dynamic ocean environment with the goal of gaining the skills and experience necessary to tour and explore the coastline safely on your own or to help you build experience with the goal of leading others. Our Ocean camp provides immersive SUP training that will introduce participants to ocean safety, self rescue and awareness, decision making, pre trip preparation and route planning.

Included in National Geographic Canada’s 50 Places of a Lifetime, the Discovery Islands are a standup paddle boarders paradise and considered to be one of the West Coast’s best kept secrets. The Islands host abundant wildlife and are home to sea lions, seals, pacific white sided dolphins, otters, colorful birds and some of the largest starfish and clams in the world. Playful seals and seal pups often approach the boards. Even transient Orcas and Humpback Whales have at times been spotted during this trip. Our week takes place at the beautiful Discovery Islands Lodge on Quadra Island. The Lodge is adjacent to Surge Narrows Marine Park which is one of the most biologically diverse ocean environments in the Pacific Northwest. Water classification ranges from flatwater to Class 4 whitewater tidal rapids. These dynamic conditions will provide an opportunity for participants to observe and understand the complexities of ocean travel. Throughout the week, there will be workshops on weather and navigation, tides and currents, safety including on water rescues, skill and stroke development. The week is infused with leadership talks, gear demo’s and shared learning and debriefs.

We are all really excited about this new sup ocean experience and we look forward to sharing our expertise and the incredible destination of the Discovery Islands.
